    March 2 2012

Potiche (France 2010). 103 mins. Dir: Francois Ozon. Cert 15

    Sponsor: LFS member

The 1970s is often remembered - fondly or otherwise - for great pop music and awful dress sense. It was also a time when issues like sexual equality were no big deal. Francois Ozon's latest film comedy scores some well directed hits on this and other prejudices of the time. Enjoy this nostalgic  trip to a land that time should have forgotten in the company of some of France's greatest acting talent.

Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini

    March 3 2012 (Saturday)

The Happiest Girl in the World  (Romania 2009). 90 mins. Dir: Radu Jude. Cert 15

    Chairman's Choice

Since the end of communism, Romanian cinema has taken many a critical look at aspects of life under and since the Ceausescu regime. This film is a bone dry satire on the new consumerism sweeping the country and neatly skewers many of the so-called advantages of the free market, including advertising and being a media star. Well worth a look!

Starring: Andreea Bosneag, Vasile Muraru, Nioleta Haret

    March 16 2012

The Last Picture Show (Classic film - USA 1971). 118 mins. Dir: Peter Bogdanovich. Cert 15

    Sponsor: Janet Dobson

This season's classic take us back to 1950s small town America. The TV revolution has arrived and the town's last cinema, a unifying symbol for  the community, is about to close. The film explores the impact this has on the lives of those in the community, especially the young people. It's widely regarded as one of Bogdanovich's finest films and arguably launched the careers of Jeff Bridges, Timothy Bottoms and Cybill Shepherd.

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, Ben Johnson, Chloris Leachman

    March 22 2012 (Thursday)

Moon (UK 2008). 96 mins. Dir: Duncan Jones. Cert 15

    A Lincoln Film Society/Lincoln Academy co-presentation

The first film directed by David Bowie's son (aka Zowie), 'Moon' is an accomplished debut, a sci-fi film for people who don't like sci-fi. Sam Bell works alone on the dark side of the Moon, supervising a mining operation for his employers. He's been there for 3 years and the lack of contact with anyone other than 'GERTY' the computer, starts to affect him in dangerous ways....

Starring: Sam Rockwell, (voice of) Kevin Spacey

Showing at the Architecture Building, Lincoln University campus at 7.30pm

    March 30 2012

Outside the Law (Hors la Loi - France 2010). 138 mins. Dir: Rachid Bouchareb. Cert 15

    Sponsor: LFS members

Rachid Bouchareb is making a habit of opening up the hidden side of historical events. After 'Days of Glory' (his incisive war drama about the treatment of Algerian soldiers by the French who fought alongside them as Allies during World War 2) and 'London River' (shown in October last year), he returns to the troubled waters of Franco-Algerian relations with this thrilling drama set mostly in Paris in the 1950s as the Algerians fought tooth and nail for their independence from colonial rule.

Starring: Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila
